Premium Quality Building Materials: Why Your Concrete Decides How Long Your Floor Lasts

Every floor we coat or polish is only as good as the concrete underneath it. That is why the quality of the building materials used in a new slab — and the suppliers behind them — matters long before a flooring contractor ever arrives. Ontario builders and homeowners often source ready-mix, aggregates and landscaping materials from established local suppliers such as Cornwall Concrete, and choosing well at this stage saves real money later.

Why concrete quality decides how long a floor lasts

Coatings and polished finishes bond to, or are cut into, the top few millimetres of the slab. If that surface is weak, the finished floor is weak too. Common problems that trace back to materials and placement include:

  • Weak surface paste (laitance) — dusts and scales, and coatings can lift with it.
  • Poor air entrainment in exterior or garage slabs — more vulnerable to freeze-thaw scaling and road-salt damage.
  • Excess water in the mix — lower strength, more shrinkage cracking.
  • Inadequate curing — a softer, more porous top layer.
  • Missing vapour barrier under interior slabs — moisture that pushes coatings off from below.

What to ask for when pouring a new slab

If you are building a new garage, basement or commercial space and plan to coat or polish the floor later, discuss these points with your builder and supplier:

  • a mix designed for its exposure — air-entrained concrete for garages and exterior areas in Ontario;
  • a vapour barrier under interior slabs on grade;
  • proper finishing and a full curing period;
  • well-placed control joints to manage cracking;
  • no curing compounds or sealers that will need to be ground off, unless agreed in advance.

Timing: when can new concrete be coated?

New concrete needs time to cure and release moisture before a coating goes down. Rather than guessing, we test moisture levels on site and recommend the right system and timing. In the first winter, avoid spreading de-icing salts on new concrete.

What we do when the slab is not perfect

Most floors we work on are existing slabs with a history. Our surface preparation removes weak surface layers, old coatings and contamination, and our concrete repair restores cracks, spalls and salt damage before any coating system or polishing begins.
