Concrete Coating

Engineered protective layers designed to strengthen, seal and preserve concrete surfaces exposed to mechanical wear, chemical exposure, moisture intrusion, abrasion and continuous operational traffic. Properly installed coating systems create a seamless protective barrier that enhances surface durability, simplifies maintenance and extends the long-term performance life of the concrete substrate across residential, commercial and industrial environments.

More Than a Coating

Concrete coating is not simply the process of applying material over a slab. A properly developed coating system functions as a protective assembly engineered around the condition, behavior and operational demands of the concrete itself. Concrete continuously reacts to environmental conditions including moisture movement, thermal expansion, traffic stress, chemical exposure and surface contamination. Without proper protection, concrete surfaces gradually deteriorate through abrasion, dusting, impact wear, salt penetration, freeze-thaw cycling and chemical breakdown.

How Epoxy Boss Approaches It

At Epoxy Boss, every concrete coating project begins with substrate evaluation, mechanical preparation and environmental analysis before any material is installed. Surface condition, slab integrity, moisture behavior and operational exposure are evaluated to determine the correct preparation methods, coating technologies and long-term protection strategy required for the environment. Preparation remains the foundation of every coating system. Improperly prepared concrete may lead to coating delamination, adhesion failure, moisture-related breakdown and premature surface deterioration regardless of the material being installed.

Surface

Concrete Behaves Differently Depending On:

Moisture Movement

Vapour drive and hydrostatic pressure directly affect coating adhesion

Curing History

Curing compounds leave residue that blocks coating penetration

Thermal Cycling

Expansion and contraction stresses the bond between coating and substrate

Traffic Load

Vehicle and equipment weight determines required coating thickness and hardness

Slab Age

Older slabs may have altered alkalinity and reduced surface tensile strength

Previous Contamination

Oil, salts, and chemicals embedded in the slab require removal before coating

Salt Exposure

Road salt causes subsurface crystallization and concrete degradation

Chemical Exposure

Acids, fuels, and solvents require specific chemical-resistant formulations

FAQ

Everything you need to know about concrete coating, installation, durability, maintenance, and project expectations.
How long do concrete coating systems last?

System lifespan depends on preparation quality, environmental exposure, traffic intensity, maintenance practices and coating technology selection.

Can coatings be installed over damaged concrete?

Damaged concrete often requires grinding, crack remediation, resurfacing or substrate correction before coating installation. Surface condition directly affects long-term system performance.

Are concrete coatings slippery?

Slip resistance may be adjusted depending on operational requirements using anti-slip additives and aggregate broadcast systems.

Can concrete coatings handle heavy traffic?

Yes. Properly engineered coating systems can withstand:

  • vehicle traffic
  • forklifts
  • pallet jacks
  • industrial equipment
  • operational movement
  • continuous commercial use

depending on system design and coating thickness.

Why is surface preparation important before coating installation?

Preparation creates the mechanical concrete profile required for proper bond development between the coating system and the substrate. Without preparation, coatings may fail prematurely through delamination or adhesion breakdown.

What is the difference between concrete coating and floor paint?

Concrete coatings are engineered resin systems designed to mechanically bond into prepared concrete substrates. Standard paints primarily sit on the surface and do not provide the same adhesion strength, durability or long-term protection.

What is a concrete coating?

A concrete coating is a protective resin system installed over properly prepared concrete to improve durability, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and long-term surface protection under residential, commercial or industrial conditions.
