A driveway takes the worst of Ontario: freeze-thaw cycles, road salt tracked up from the street, oil drips and years of tire wear. Before any sealer or coating can protect it, the surface has to be clean, open and sound. That is exactly what shot blasting does.
What is shot blasting?
Shot blasting propels small steel beads at the concrete in an enclosed, vacuum-recovered machine. The beads strike the slab, remove the weak top layer and surface contamination, and are collected and reused along with the dust. The result is a clean, evenly textured surface with a controlled profile — without acid, water or a cloud of dust.
Why shot blasting suits driveways
- Removes what blocks adhesion — weak surface paste, old sealers and surface oil staining that a pressure washer leaves behind.
- Consistent texture — an even profile that sealers and coatings can bond to.
- No acid and no runoff — nothing to neutralize or wash onto the lawn or into the storm drain.
- Low dust — the vacuum system captures debris, which makes it practical next to a home.
- Efficient on large flat areas — driveways, walkways and patios are prepared far faster than by hand grinding.
What shot blasting cannot do
It prepares the surface; it does not repair the slab. Structural cracks, spalling, settlement and drainage problems need to be dealt with first through concrete repair and restoration. Concrete that is heavily oil-saturated or scaled may also need diamond grinding or removal of damaged layers before it can be coated.
Our shot blasting process
- Inspect the slab for cracks, scaling, drainage and any existing sealer.
- Protect the garage door, landscaping and adjacent surfaces.
- Blast the open areas in overlapping passes; edges and tight spots are finished with diamond grinders.
- Repair cracks and spalls with a compatible material.
- Vacuum and verify that the profile is clean and even.
- Seal or coat with the system specified for the slab.
Equipment matters
For residential driveways we use the Bartell Morrison Shotblaster Hornet (110 V, 2.8 hp). It is compact enough to work around vehicles and entrances, runs on standard power and is built for the controlled, repeatable profile that driveways, walkways, patios and garage floors need. On a recent Innisfil project, a three-person crew prepared, ground and coated the slab in a single visit.
Shot blasting vs grinding vs acid etching
- Shot blasting — best for large, flat exterior and interior slabs.
- Diamond grinding — best for edges, coating removal and levelling high spots.
- Acid etching — uneven and unreliable; this is why we do not use it. Read why we avoid concrete etching.
After blasting: protecting the driveway
Open, freshly blasted concrete should not be left unprotected through an Ontario winter. Depending on the slab and how you use it, that means a penetrating sealer or a UV-stable concrete coating system. Garage floors and entry pads can be prepared in the same visit.
