How do I prepare the surface before applying epoxy?

How do I prepare the surface before applying epoxy?

  1. Clean the surface thoroughly: Remove any dirt, dust, grease, or other contaminants using a broom, vacuum, or mop. For stubborn stains, use a degreaser or appropriate cleaning solution.

  2. Repair any damage: Fill in cracks, holes, or uneven areas using a suitable epoxy patching compound or filler. Smooth out the patched areas and allow them to dry completely.

Remove existing coatings: If there are any existing coatings or sealers on the surface, such as paint or varnish, they need to be removed. Use a floor grinder, sander, or chemical stripper to strip off the old coatings and expose the bare surface.

Etch or mechanically profile the surface: Epoxy requires a roughened surface for proper adhesion. You can either etch the surface using an acid etching solution or mechanically profile it using a floor grinder or shot blaster. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific product you’re using.

Clean the surface again: After etching or profiling, thoroughly rinse the surface with water to remove any residue. Allow it to dry completely before proceeding with the epoxy application.

By properly preparing the surface, you’ll ensure good adhesion and maximize the longevity of your epoxy floor.
